Susan Mohini Kane: performing artist, professor, and author of The 21st Century Singer: Making the Leap from the University into the World published by Oxford University Press.
American soprano, teacher, and author, Susan Mohini Kane has enjoyed a versatile career as an established oratorio and symphonic artist as well as an opera and concert singer. Kane’s “crystal-clear voice and impeccable technique” (LA Culture Spot Magazine) has kept her performing professionally for over two decades with regional symphonies and opera companies in the Midwest and in California. Besides the traditional classical genres, Kane specializes in premiering new music and in performing a new genre that includes fusions of opera, art song, musical theatre, and American/European Songbooks she has coined “Classical Cabaret.” Recently Kane has gone back to her singer songwriter roots completing two new songs: “Long Time Ago” and “Higher Ground.”
Kane’s book: The 21st Century Singer, Making the Leap from the University into the World, published by Oxford University Press has been called “A must-read for any emerging singer” by iCadenza Artists. “Kane’s thoughtful yet disciplined approach as outlined in The 21st Century Singer, encourages the kind of self-reflection and creativity that, at the very least, can lend direction and big-picture perspective to career goals while also rekindling a love of singing.” ~Brian Manternach (Classical Singer Magazine, October 2015)
“In the research for this book, she [Kane] encountered many singers who have found nontraditional ways to make a living from their art. The discovery transformed her from a pessimist to an optimist about the value of a degree in vocal performance. Even more sweeping, however, is her realization that “singers who lead can change the world.” All of this is heartening for singers who are graduating with a degree in vocal performance.” ~Debra Grashner (NATS Journal of Singing, October/November 2015)
Kane has recorded two CDs. Music Web International touted her first CD, A MOMENT OF JOY, as “a truly inspirational disc.” Her second CD, FROM THE HEART: MUSIC FOR CALM, INSPIRATION, AND WELLNESS, is a collection of beautiful classical vocalises for voice and piano was funded by gifts and external grants.
In November of 2016, Kane performed the California premier of Stephen Dembski’s one-woman opera, Moon in the Mirror. Her original shows DUEL DUET and IT’S ALRIGHT TO BE HAPPY have enjoyed excellent reviews in both in Europe and the US.
